Gap Year

Spend your Gap Year with YWAM.

Spiritual formation. Practical ministry experience. Leadership. Fun. Family. Community.

Do you feel like your desire to take a Gap Year is at odds with your desire to be intentional with your life? It doesn’t have to be! We believe that everyone is called to missions. . . it just might look a little different than what you had in mind. Why don’t you consider joining us for a year to leave your comfort zone, grow in your relationship with God, get some experience in different types of work and ministry, and explore your identity in Christ—all while enjoying the deep relationships that are born within a supportive Christian community. You may not know how you want to spend the rest of your life (and that’s perfectly okay!), but our Gap Year program will set you on a course of flourishing no matter what direction you take from here.

Your first six months will be the Urban Village Discipleship Training School where we focus on knowing God, growing in your knowledge of the Bible, personal character development, and entry level practical ministry work within the community and abroad.
After your DTS you will have a two week break to travel or rest and then you will start the internship phase of our Leadership Communal for the rest of your Gap Year Program.
All interns in the Leadership Communal are volunteers like the rest of YWAM staff worldwide. This means you will be living with other staff members, paying weekly staff fees (your portion of the rent, utilities, and food), and volunteering as an intern. Depending on your skills and passion you will be volunteering in one of several areas: administration, marketing and communications, childcare, community care, maintenance, kitchen, hospitality, worphip team, and more. Like our staff, your ministry responsibilities will vary according to our overall ministry needs and your particular skills.

In addition to your area of ministry responsibility, everyone involved in the Leadership Communal will also be a part of small group leadership development in areas such as:
  • Group dynamics
  • Gifts and calling
  • Budgeting
  • Time management skills
  • Listening skills
  • Theology of place
  • How to plan and lead a Bible study
  • Faith and finances
  • Member care and personal wellness
  • Bible character case studies
  • Basic project management skills
  • And more…

Together we will read through leadership books by experts in the field and further delve into leadership in a missional context. Most of our discussions will take place within our weekly Leadership Communal gatherings, which are lead by YWAM Sydney Newtown leaders, staff, and guest speakers, as well as small group discussion sessions.

Other features of the Leadership Communal:

  • Peer groups with two other interns and/or staff called a “triplets” for prayer and mutual encouragement.
  • One on one mentoring with YWAM Sydney Newtown leaders.
  • Group assignment: Love Thy Neighbour Village Project
  • Experience planning outreach activities and community events.
